It’s the same race every year – who will cross the finish line first among the Crus Bourgeois? This year, too, the tasting will take place at Château d’Arsac. Around 250 samples are available there and it takes a lot of discipline and skill to keep track of things here. The vintage was announced as “outstanding” and many red wines are in excellent condition. However, a few châteaux did not want to keep things moderate with their extraction and created over-vinified fruit monsters. These then often lack the backbone. But when I met Bernard Lartigue’s Mayne-Lalande, it was all over me! The Listrac likes to present itself as muscled and boyish, but this time it’s completely different! I experience density and soupiness, that I have never seen before with this wine. With the consultant Hubert De Boüard (including Angélus) a man has been brought to the side who attaches particular importance to the highest precision in the vineyard and in the cellar!
Mayne – Lalande 2016: purple with a purple border. Complex, blueberry bouquet with blackberries and violets, behind a lot of cassis and dark precious woods. Plump palate with fine floury tannins and a structure full of character; ends in a long finale with a basket full of blueberries and chocolate notes. Great Listrac, on the same level as the great 2004!
